Are ChatGPT ads worth it? What they cost in India and who should try them first

ChatGPT started showing ads to Indian users at the end of August 2026, and since 4 September any business can sign up and run them without an agency or an invitation. That's a new ad channel inside a tool hundreds of millions of people already use to research what to buy.

For a channel this new, the useful question isn't "should we be there?". It's "is it worth testing yet, and how small can the test be?" Here's what you need to know to decide.

What ChatGPT ads actually are

A ChatGPT ad is a sponsored card that appears below ChatGPT's answer, clearly labelled "Sponsored" and kept separate from the answer itself. OpenAI says ads don't change what ChatGPT says, and that advertisers never see anyone's conversations. They only get totals like views and clicks.

A few rules decide who sees them:

  • Only logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. Go costs ₹399 a month in India. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts don't see ads.
  • No one under 18, whether they say so or OpenAI predicts it.
  • Not next to sensitive topics. OpenAI doesn't show ads in conversations about things like health, mental health or politics.

OpenAI picks which ad to show using the conversation, your ad and landing page, and short descriptions you write about when your ad is useful. If a person has ad personalisation switched on, their past chats can also play a part.

How they're different from Google Ads

On Google you bid on keywords: the words people type. ChatGPT has no keyword list. Instead you write context hints: plain-language descriptions of the conversations where your ad would help, such as "a family planning a December holiday in Goa and comparing resorts".

That has two consequences:

  1. You reach people mid-decision. Someone asking ChatGPT "which laptop is best for video editing under ₹80,000?" is comparing options right now. A relevant ad below that answer can actually help.
  2. You get less control. You can't lock an ad to an exact search, and you can't see which questions triggered it. You steer with your hints, your ad and your landing page, then let the system find the conversations.

What ChatGPT ads cost in India

  • Minimum budget: ₹725 per campaign per day. That's the published minimum for India (the US equivalent is $25).
  • How you pay: you set a maximum bid either per thousand views (CPM) or per click (CPC), and ads compete in an auction. You can optimise for views, clicks or conversions.
  • What clicks actually cost: it's too early for reliable Indian benchmarks. For context, US launch pricing was reported at around $60 per thousand views with a $200,000 minimum in February 2026. That fell to roughly $25 once self-serve opened in May. One Indian agency's short test reported about ₹14 per click, but that was a single small campaign over a few days, not a benchmark.

A fair first test is three to four weeks at or near the minimum: roughly ₹15,000 to ₹22,000 in ad spend. Anything shorter mostly measures luck.

Who should try ChatGPT ads first

ChatGPT ads make the most sense for businesses whose customers research and compare before they buy:

  • Considered purchases: courses and education, travel and stays, electronics, furniture, software, D2C products with a clear "why ours" story.
  • Local services that people ask about: home services, coaching, event planners, repairs.
  • Businesses already making Google Ads work. If you already know your cost per lead on Google, you can judge ChatGPT ads against a real number instead of a feeling.

Who should wait, or can't advertise yet

  • Healthcare, financial services and legal services. Outside the US these categories are generally not allowed at the moment, so most Indian clinics, lenders and law firms can't run ChatGPT ads yet.
  • Prohibited categories everywhere: alcohol, gambling and betting, dating, tobacco and vaping, political ads, and individual job or property listings. Real estate businesses should check the policy carefully before planning anything.
  • Businesses missing the basics. If you don't track enquiries, your landing page is slow, or Google and Meta aren't profitable yet, fix those first. A new channel won't rescue a leaky funnel.

How to run a small first test

  1. Check your category against OpenAI's ad policies before you build anything.
  2. Set up tracking. Add OpenAI's pixel or Conversions API so leads and sales are counted, and tag your links so they show up separately in Google Analytics.
  3. Start with one campaign and two or three ad groups, each built around one buying situation. Write context hints the way a customer would describe their problem, not as a list of keywords.
  4. Write ads that answer the question. A specific headline ("Weekend Goa villas with private pools") beats a slogan.
  5. Send clicks to a page that matches the ad, not your homepage. Our guide to fixing your landing page covers what that page needs.
  6. Run it for three to four weeks, then compare cost per lead or sale with Google and Meta. Look at how many of those visitors were new to you, too.

What early results look like

OpenAI has published a couple of advertiser results. It reported that WeightWatchers' cost per acquisition on ChatGPT ads was 15.3% lower than its usual paid-search benchmark, and that 93% of one leather-goods brand's visitors from ChatGPT ads were new to the brand. These are hand-picked examples shared by the platform itself. Treat them as encouraging, not as proof it will work for you.

So, are ChatGPT ads worth it?

For most growing businesses: worth a small, controlled test, not a budget shift. Test if you're in an allowed category, your tracking works and your other ads already pay for themselves. Keep your proven channels running while you learn.

And remember the ads sit below the answer. The answer itself is free, and you can't buy your way into it. If you want ChatGPT to name your business in its answers, read how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT.

Questions people ask

Are ChatGPT ads available in India?

Yes. ChatGPT started showing ads to Indian users on 27 August 2026, and the self-serve Ads Manager opened to Indian businesses on 4 September 2026.

What is the minimum budget for ChatGPT ads in India?

₹725 per campaign per day. A fair first test usually runs three to four weeks, roughly ₹15,000 to ₹22,000 in ad spend.

Can I pay to appear inside ChatGPT's answer?

No. Ads appear separately below the answer and are labelled as sponsored. OpenAI says ads don't influence what ChatGPT says.

Can clinics and doctors run ChatGPT ads?

Not in most cases yet. Healthcare, financial services and legal services are generally not allowed outside the US at the moment. Check OpenAI's current ad policies before planning a campaign.

Will ChatGPT ads replace Google Ads?

Not any time soon. Google still reaches far more people at the moment they search. Treat ChatGPT ads as a channel to test alongside Google and Meta, not a replacement.
